A review of the 2008 presidential candidates voting tendancies on environmental issues.
If we’ve looked at the candidate’s websites we can see that Barack Obama has the much more detailed plan in regard to energy and conservation. I thought it was also interesting that Mr. Obama’s site addresses how he and Mr. Biden, both will tackle the problem and McCain’s site only addresses how he will tackle the energy situation.
As I look into the candidates I found an interesting website, the League of Conservation Voters. They have many items on their site. I was particularly interested in the LCV scorecard. You can look at your congressman’s voting tendencies on environmental issues. They get together experts from more than 20 environmental and conservative organizations. These people select the key votes in which the candidates are graded. They calculate scores from 0 to 100 based on the number of pro-environment votes cast by the candidate out of the total number measured. Absence of a vote counts as a negative. Here’s how our candidates stood.
John McCain Lifetime score 26
Barack Obama Lifetime score 96
Joe Biden Lifetime score 84
Sarah Palin No votes
Of course, you have to remember that John McCain has been around for years, that the environment was not a priority of the government and Barack Obama has been around very few years. Below is the comparison during like years:
John McCain (2004) 67 (2005) 45 (2006) 29
Barack Obama (2005) 95 (2006) 100
Joe Biden (2004) 83 (2005) 90 (2006) 100
I did see that Sarah Palin is on the side of domestic drilling in Alaska and off their shores. She also proposed a windfall profit tax on the oil companies and used the monies to support renewable energy.
